Periyar national park is famed for its picturesque beauty and enclosed with thick evergreen, perinial forests and grass lands on the higher slope. Periyar is perhaps one of the few places where elephants without task can be seen in their natural habitat.
The other wildlife are gaur, sambhar, bison, barking and mouse deer, nilgiri languor, pig, tiger, panther, leopard, sloth, bear, jungle cat, small Indian civet and Malabar squirrel bonnet macaque. Elephants in Periyar make best forest for wildlife and bird watching.There is a large array of birds in the park which includes Indian hornbill, darter, king fisher, black necked stork, butterflies and many other Indian and migratory birds
The best time to see tigers, leopards is the dry season when forest water body dries up and these animals come to drink river water.
There is facility for boating in the Park and the best time is early in the morning and evening. Elephant rides, jeep safari are available too. There is a watch tower inside the forest to watch wild animals and birds.
