Periyar National Park was founded in the year 1950 the name derived from Periyar river is located in Idukki district having area more than 260 square kilometres. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady adjacent to the scenic Periyar lake in Kerala, was selected a part of Project Tiger reserves in India in 1973. The reserve was awarded with the India Bio diversity Award for best managed protected area of wildlife in October 2012.
