The flourishing green Salim Ali or Thattekkadu bird sanctuary at Kuttambuzha in Kothamangalam Taluk on the north banks of the Periyar River is 57 kilometres away from Kochi. This park is the home of nearly 35 species of mammals, 260 varieties of birds including migratory ones, numerous species of reptiles, amphibians and fishes. 

Thattekkad located at an altitude of 30 to 500 meters over sea level once a place for rubber plantation and presence of wildlife was declared a bird sanctuary of Kerala on August 27 in 1983 with an area of 25 square kilometres. Dr.Salim Ali the eminent ornithologist of India led to the foundation of this sanctuary. Several rare species of birds along with natural beauty of Thattekkad is the place for tourist attraction and bird watching.
