Bounded by snow clad mountains and crystal clear freezing water, it is considered to be a very sanctified lake. Myth has it that, Guru Padmasambhava (as well known as Guru Dongmar), touched and blessed the lake, thus, even in tremendous winter, a segment of the lake does not freeze.
The lake is in addition one of the resources of River Teesta, which flows in the course of Sikkim, West Bengal and Bangladesh to unite with the Bay of Bengal. The water of Gurudongmar Lake are said to have remedial properties and lots of tourists cart the water on their way back. Near to the lake, there is a Sarva Dharma Sthal, and as the name advocates, it is a position of worship for all religions.
