The lofty snow clad Dhauladhar ranges form a wonderful backdrop to the hill resort of Dharamsala. This is the main township of Kangra district and overlooks extensive plains. With thick pine and deodar forests, abundant streams, chilly healthy air, eye-catching surroundings and the close by snowline, Dharamsala has everything for an ideal holiday which is full of life and yet serene. Spreading over a wide area forming the twin settlement, lower Dharamsala 1380 meters is a busy commercial centre. While upper Dharamsala 1830 meters with the suburbs of Mcleodganj and Forsytheganj, keep hold of a British flavour and colonial lifestyle. The appealing church of St. John in the wilderness is located here and this is the ultimate place for rest of Lord Elgin, a British Viceroy of India for the period of the 19th century. There is furthermore a big Tibetan community who have made this position their home. Several ancient temples like Jwalamukhi, Brijeshwari and Chamunda are located on the plains beneath Dharamsala.
