The holy shrine of Amarnath is located 145 km from Srinagar, the capital of the North Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Situated at the height of 3888 m above mean sea level, the Amarnath Cave is considered as holy pilgrimage of the Hindus. Each year a gigantic stalagmite or pillar of ice is formed in the shape of a phallus, inside this cave. The ice pillar is worshiped as Shiva lingam. Thousands of pilgrims travel crossing the mountains in order to pray and worship at the santified Amarnath cave shrine, in July and August each year.
