Mamallapuram, a long time ago the ancient port of Pallavas and world famed for its shore temple is located 58km south of Chennai. It is renowned for its monolithic rock sculptures, cave along with stone temples. The blend of old 7th and 8th century Pallava carvings, temples and magnificent beaches make the position a stunning tourist destination.
A vivacious festival of dance in India is held at the place of Arjuna's penance, a bass relief sculpt on the facade two huge adjoining rocks, in Mamallapuram from early January for four weeks. Exemplars of classical dances of India like Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, Kathakali are performed in an open air stage adjacent to the splendid backdrop of the Pallava rock sculptures. Along with classical, folk dances too are performed. Dancers from diverse parts of India perform for the duration of this festival. The famous festival is organized by the Department of Tourism , Government of Tamil Nadu .
