Golconda fort is one of the most glorious fortress complex in India which is situated on the western outskirts about 11km from Hyderabad, the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The history of Golconda Fort dates back to the early 13th century when the south eastern part of the country was under the rule of the Kakatiyas. The vastness of the ruins of this fort, date from the era of the Qutub Shahi kings, who had ruled this region during the 16th and 17th century.

The fortress is erected on a granite hill 120 metres high, surrounded by enormous crenellated ramparts. Shepherd's Hill or Golla Konda, as it was recognized in Telugu, has an exciting story behind it. In 1143, on the rocky hill called 'Mangalavaram', a shepherd boy came across an idol. This was communicated to the Kakatiya king, who was the ruler at that time. The king got a mud fort built around ttook control of the fort.

From 1507 over a phase of 62 years the mud fort was extended by the first three Qutub Shahi kings into a huge fort of granite, that extend around 5 km in circumference, which has been a silent witness to lots of historic events. The illustrious ruling of the Qutub Shahis at Golconda terminated in 1687, with the take-over of the fort by the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb, who almost entirely shattered the fort and left it in a load of pathetic ruins.he holy spot and almost 200 years later Bahamini rulers (1364)
