Art Section - Indian Museum , Kolkata

The Art Section extended on the First and Second floor having galleries of textiles, paintings, decorative art objects from China and Japan, specimens from Burma, Nepal, and Tibet and many more. The exhibits in the art section consists of Nepalese and Tibetan temple banners / Thankas, metal images, enameled wares, bidri wares, ornaments, silver wares, glass wares, pottery, ivory and bone work, wooden sculptures etc. The painting gallery has a rich exhibit of Mughal Miniature Paintings, Kangra-Kalam Paintings, Kalighat Patas from Bengal and a segment of works of renowned painters from Bengal. Together with the compilation of Nepalese and Tibetan Thankas (scroll paintings made on cloth) dated from 15 to 19 century, the textile gallery has a show of Muslin and Jamdani from Dhaka, Persian Carpets, Phulkari work of Punjab, Kantha work from Bengal, rumal / handkerchiefs from Chamba in Himachal Pradesh etc. The South East Asian gallery in the Art section has three parts of galleries for artifacts from China-Japan, Burma and Nepal-Tibet. In China-Japan Art gallery there are colored porcelains, wine cups, ivory and rhinoceros horn carved items, paintings etc. Burmese gallery put on show brass and bronze figures, wood carvings, silver wares and lacquer ware objects that depict 'Jatakas', scene from the epic 'Ramayana' etc. Nepal-Tibet gallery abode bronze figures and wood carvings from 9th to 19th century, apron made of human bones, butter-lamp, ornaments etc.

Anthropological Section displays quite a few objects like the costumes, ornaments, implements of the a variety of tribes and gives an insight to the cultural life of equally tribal and non-tribal people of India. There is in addition a gallery of rare musical instruments.
Archaeological Section is the collected works of stone-age artifact from India and abroad, pre-historic antiquity from Mohenjodaro, Harappa etc. Several of the galleries in this section are Bharhut, Egyptian, Coins, Orissan Art, Gandhara etc. Bharhut gallery houses the railings and entrance of the Buddhist Stupa with carvings and sculptures which depict scenes from life of Buddha excavated from Bharhut in Madhya Pradesh in 1874 by Sir Alexander Cunningham. There is as well an urn containing Buddha's ashes. Owing to this the museum has become a place of pilgrimage. Gandhara galleries hold the most excellent collection of Buddhist Sculptures from Gandhara region and other stone sculptures. The Egyptian gallery has a 4000 year old 'mummy', sculptures, paintings etc. The coin gallery has a compilation of coins from the 5th century B.C. which displays gold coins issued by Kanishka, Samudragupta, Kumaragupta 1, Akbar and Jahangir.

The museum is open to the public each day except Mondays and recognized holidays. The working hour is from 10.00 am to 5 pm. From December to February the museum closes half an hour earlier. Photography is not permitted without prior written permission from the authorities. Entry fee to the museum : for Indians Rs.10 and for Foreigners Rs.150

The Kolkata Indian Museum established much back in 1814 in the Asiatic Society Building whose founder was Dr. Nathaniel Wallich, a botanist from Denmark. It is one of the most primitive museums established in the world and considered the biggest in the country. In 1875, it was transfered to the new building in Italian architectural style designed by Walter B Grawille. Unlocked to public in 1878, the museum has more than 60 galleries under six main sectors of Art, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geology, Industry and Zoology. The museum with three floors is extended over an area of 930 sq.mts. It is an independent institution funded by the Government of India.

The Anthropology and Archaeology sections are positioned on the ground floor. There is furthermore a library and publication unit, to be found next to the coin gallery, which has a enormous collection of around 50 thousand books and journals on diverse subjects.

The entry to Hawa Mahal is from the City Palace side, through a majestic door which opens into a roomy courtyard. The courtyard has a double storied building on three sides. There is a tiny archeological museum here. Just the eastern wing has three more stories over, which are just a single room thick. The building, stand on a elevated podium, is a fifty-foot high slim shield, less than a foot in thickness, with little intimate chambers , which give this palace its exclusive facade. There are no usual stairs to reach the upper floors, but just ramps.

Hawa Mahal which is presently under the supervision of the State archeological department provides the visitor with brilliant panorama of the city. The best time to sight Hawa Mahal is sunrise when sunlight through the latticed windows gives it a breathtaking glow.

Erected in 1799, by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh the Hawa Mahal , the Palace of the Wind, is one of the most important landmarks of Jaipur. It is an essential part of the City Palace, an annex of the Zenana (women's chambers) standing away from the central complex. This five storey building of curious architecture designed by Lal Chand Usta, is a spectacular example of Rajput artistry made of red and pink sand stone, brilliantly outlined with white borders and motifs painted by quick lime. The monument with a stunning view of Jaipur city with road avenues, intersections and colorful crowds in the market, was initially conceived with the aim to enable ladies of the royal household to observe the daily life and royal processions in the city without being noticed by others.

Its fascia from the road side makes Hawa Mahal look more like a flimsy screen than a palace. This five storied, pyramid shaped structure has story after story of 953 little casements, each with miniature lattice / Jali work of pink windows, small balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices, gracefully modeled and engraved. These small windows circulate cool air /Hawa even during hot months. The pyramidal outline is even all the way through by cramming and multiplying casements; and uses replication of motifs to boost its splendor.
